Game Streaming with NDI® in OBS and TriCaster

April 26, 2019 by Ely Stacy, video; Chuck Baker, text

NewTek product specialist Ely Stacy provides a thorough tour of how to use NewTek’s NDI® to capture video from a gaming system and get it to a streaming system. He takes us through the steps of setting up NDI Scan Converter to send both the main display and the webcam capture of a gaming system to the network as NDI streams. From there, he first demonstrates how to set up popular Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) to pick up those NDI streams and layer them in project which you can then stream out to your favorite social video network, or record. He completes the tour with a demonstration of how to do the same in NewTek TriCaster®.

There are two downloads you’ll need to do to accomplish this. Scan Converter is part of the free NewTek NDI Tools Pack, and OBS requires a free NDI plugin. Both links are in the “Learn More” list below; just install as per the instructions for each, and then you can follow this tutorial.

For those who wish add an external camera on the player and perhaps even one on a commentator, you can do that via the network as well, rather than resort to a capture card and dedicated video cables. You would use NewTek Connect Spark, Spark Plus or Spark Pro, which come in HDMI-to-NDI and SDI-to-NDI flavors, to make your camera a network video source. You can place your camera and Spark anywhere you can put a network cable or reach your wireless network.
