Pennsylvania High School Students Win Three NATAS Awards Using NDI® and TriCaster®
The Penn-Trafford High School video broadcast team has a lot to celebrate following its three wins at the 2018 National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) Mid-Atlantic Student Production Awards ceremony.
The same organization that bestows the coveted Emmy® Awards, honored the Penn-Trafford team with three engraved crystal awards for excellence. The first was the Trently Prize for Best Live Daily Newscast for their show Wake Up Warriors, the second in the Light News category for the team’s Make-A-Wish fundraising coverage and the third in the On Air Talent category for student anchor Maddy Haberberger’s talent reel.
Students from more than a dozen high schools throughout the Greater Philadelphia region attend the award ceremony held every May at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Awards were presented to the students by local media professionals and given to those with achievements in television in 16 categories.
“The Student Production Awards really highlight the tremendous passion and talent in store for our industry,” said Tara Faccenda, Executive Director of NATAS Mid-Atlantic. “We are always blown away by the quality of work produced by students and their drive to tell stories is inspiring.”
Penn-Trafford Video Production Teacher Steve Vinton has led the video program for nearly eight years and says all of these awards validate their efforts and the work his students put into each broadcast.
“We are very excited and honored to win these awards,” he said. “We strive to produce a professional looking show on a daily basis.”
Fostering Production Excellence Through Technology
As an early adopter of NDI® (Network Device Interface), Penn-Trafford’s team has used the cutting-edge technology with a NewTek TriCaster® 460 to produce a variety of broadcasts. NDI allows the team to incorporate audio and video sources into productions from anywhere on their local IP network.
Apart from the live daily newscast that is watched in student classrooms and streamed live, the team covers assemblies in the auditorium, some football games from its stadium and monthly school board meetings that are streamed on its YouTube channel.
“NDI has truly changed everything for us,” Vinton said. “And we’re only beginning to utilize its full potential. I can only imagine how we’ll be using this technology to broaden our coverage even further in the future.”
Penn-Trafford currently uses NDI to import graphics, timelines and video from its devices, and to send video from one TriCaster to another.
Vinton says their next move will be expanding the video program to the school district’s two middle schools, which already have TriCaster 40 Series three-camera video production systems but have yet to be added to the network.
